The afforestation activities carried out by the Adopt a Tree programme aim to create additional forests and forest shelterbelts, meaning new forests, rather than restoring previously forested areas. They are intended to address environmental and social problems affecting communities in southern Romania, particularly in the counties with the greatest forest deficit.

Educational sessions

The Adopt a Tree programme provides educational sessions on environmental and sustainable development topics for communities where afforestation activities take place, with the aim of increasing knowledge and awareness.

The people living in these communities are the direct beneficiaries of the forest shelterbelts. They are the ones who grow alongside the trees and who need to understand their role and help protect them. Therefore, they need as much information as possible to make informed decisions.

The educational sessions take the form of presentations on waste reduction, reuse and proper recycling, as well as on the importance of forests for a healthy life, environmental competitions and clean up activities.

These activities mainly involve pupils from schools in the communities benefiting from afforestation activities.

WHERE?

In 2010, the “Friends of the Forest” competition was also held on World Environment Day, 5 June. Pupils from grades 1 to 8 from schools in Dragoș Vodă and Vâlcelele took part.

On 26 March 2010, an educational event took place, including presentations on environmental topics and clean up activities, involving pupils from Dragoș Vodă.

Between March and June 2014, 115 pupils from schools in Poroschia and Dragoș Vodă took part in workshops organised as part of the educational sessions delivered by the ViitorPlus team.

On 31 May 2018, in Chirnogi, the commune where we had been working to establish a forest shelterbelt since autumn 2017, the project team delivered four educational sessions attended by approximately 200 pupils and 10 teachers from the two schools offering grades 1 to 8.

In autumn 2021, more than 600 pupils from preparatory grade through grade 8 took part in educational sessions supported by OMV Petrom. The activities were carried out in schools in Breasta, Bistreț, Celaru and Goicea, Dolj County.
