Location: Lumina Commune, Constanța County
Project start: Spring 2022
Planted area: 9.5 hectares
Objective: Establishment of a land improvement belt for the rehabilitation of degraded land.
Species planted: Turkestan elm (Ulmus minor), manna ash (Fraxinus ornus), green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), common privet (Ligustrum vulgare), and Russian olive (Elaeagnus angustifolia).
Canopy closure: Autumn 2028 (estimated)
Current project status: 1.8 hectares of the total 9.5 hectares are currently being implemented. The development and completion of the remaining area depend on securing additional funding.

Why establish land improvement belts?
Lumina Commune is located in Constanța County, one of Romania’s least forested counties, with forests covering only 5% of its total area. In addition to its low forest cover, Constanța County is affected by soil desertification. This process can be slowed and mitigated through the planting of forest saplings and their long term maintenance, helping to restore degraded land and improve soil fertility.
