Why establish the shelterbelt?
Chirnogi Commune is located in the western part of Călărași County, 7 km north of the Danube River, in an area formed by the southeastern edge of the Burnas Plain and the floodplain at the confluence of the Argeș River and the Danube.
Every winter, the locality experiences heavy snowdrifts that block access roads, particularly the national road to Oltenița. As a result, local residents may lose access to medical services, food supplies, schools and workplaces. The shelterbelt was established to protect National Road DN41 from snowdrifts while also contributing to the restoration of the Argeș River floodplain.
The land provided by Chirnogi Town Hall covers approximately 9.5 hectares and is classified as degraded land.
Latest work carried out: Replacement planting in April 2026 and manual weeding in June 2026.
