Location: Goicea commune, Dolj county

Objective: to establish a forested perimeter for the rehabilitation of abandoned and degraded land, previously used for sand and gravel exploitation.
Planted species: pedunculate oak (Guercus robur), ash (Fraxinus excelsior), willow (Elaeagnus angustifolia) , and elm (Ulmus minor).
Mature stage of the forest: autumn 2027 (estimated)

Reason for choosing this location
Goicea commune is located in the south of Dolj county, an area severely affected by desertification and soil degradation. The county also has a low degree of afforestation, at the end of 2019 only 10.8% of the area was covered with forests.
The 4.8 hectare plot of land, made available by the local administration, has been used in the past in the exploitation of sand and gravel, being abandoned and declared unproductive since 2014.
In the spring of 2021, the program “Adoptă un Copac” began the afforestation campaign, with the support of Goicea City Hall. Employing local people and partners, “Adoptă un Copac” managed to plant 20,000 seedlings of forest species on an area of 3 hectares in order to improve soil quality and environmental conditions in the area. Another hectare – approximately 4,900 trees were planted in autumn.
